History and Milestones
It all started with a noble desire to meet the serious need for a banking institution in the municipality of Tanza, Cavite. Today, Bangko Mabuhay is the choice of Caviteños.
In 1970, the incorporators of Rural Bank of Tanza (Cavite), Inc. envisioned to provide basic banking services that included savings and loans.
The authority to organize a rural bank in Tanza, Cavite was given to the Bank on April 14, 1972, and was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on July 7, 1972.

In 1984, Mr. Edwin S. Fojas, an MBM graduate of the Asian Institute of Management and a graduate of De La Salle University, assumed the position of president and general manager of Bangko Mabuhay from Mr. Raul J. Fojas.
The year 1989 marked the beginning of major developments for the Bank. Its head office in Poblacion, Tanza, Cavite was expanded into a two-storey building with a total floor area of approximately 400 square meters. Backed by services of software provider MB Phils., Inc., the Bank introduced computerization of its savings and loan accounts.
In 1992, the Bank opened its second branch and its first extension office along
A. Soriano Highway in Tanza, Cavite in anticipation of the relocation of the public market as well as the growing commercial establishments within the vicinity.
In adherence to Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ liberization program and to open doors to potential markets in 1995, the Bank applied for the approval of establishment of three (3) branches within Cavite. Also in the same year, the Bank came to be known as Bangko Mabuhay.

In August 2007, construction of a new three-storey main office building along the Hi-way Branch site commenced. Target completion of the new main office is in 2008. To better serve the needs of the rural folk, Bangko Mabuhay has established partnerships with various international and local institutions.
Its partnership with Economic Resource Center for Overseas Filipinos (ERCOF), a Europe-based non-profit organization with partner groups and focal persons in Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Japan, as well as various service providers in the Philippines, has provided the much-needed link between overseas Filipino workers and banking services that include savings and investment mechanisms, access to micro-credit institutions, skills and entrepreneurship training and other skills that will enhance their economic capabilities.
The forged link which involves the Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines (RBAP), the Philippines’ largest rural bank federation with at least 700 member rural banks, is deemed to best serve the needs of Filipinos working overseas since studies show that two-thirds of OFWs come from rural areas.
Being the premiere community-based bank in Cavite, Bangko Mabuhay provides the fruits of this welcome merger to Caviteño OFWs. Possible areas of collaboration between ERCOF and Bangko Mabuhay include:
- Opening of accounts
- Servicing of remittances
- Special savings and investment programs tied to housing, education, health, retirement and pensions (through tie-ups with service providers)
- Purchase of rural bank’s foreclosed assets
- Entrepreneurship and livelihood ventures / business development advice to OFWs and their families
- Microfinance
- Offering other financial investment instruments (e.g. mutual funds, bonds)
- Participation of rural banks in OFW pre-employment and/or pre-departure orientation, and reintegration activities
- Conduct of financial literacy seminars prior to departure (in coordination with regional or satellite offices of OWWA, POEA or PESO)
To provide value-added microfinancing services to the community, Bangko Mabuhay partnered with the Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines – Microentrepreneur Access to Banking Services (RBAP-MABS) in 2002. Through RBAP-MABS, microfinancing clients are given sufficient training and technical assistance to support the financial assistance given by the Bank. This provides clients a bigger chance to emerge successful in whatever business they’d like to pursue.
As additional assistance for new entrepreneur clients, Bangko Mabuhay has tapped the services of the University of the Philippines - Institute for Small Scale Industries (UP-ISSI), a training service provider on Small & Medium Enterprise (SME) finance supported by the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) under the Small and Medium Enterprise Program (SMEDSEP) in partnership with the Small Business Guarantee and Finance Corporation (SBGFC).
With their alliance with UP-ISSI, Bangko Mabuhay’s SME Credit Department staff underwent training on credit appraisal and monitoring of quality credit portfolios and on increasing operational efficiency.

Mabuhay ka! Success Stories
Behind the success of many Caviteños is Bangko Mabuhay.

The Our Lady of the Holy Rosary School (OLHRS), a school offering elementary and high school education under the supervision of the De La Salle system (LASSO), started operations in 1993 with only 2 rooms. To be able to continuously nourish the minds of the children in Tanza, Cavite, school head Maxima Hernandez obtained a loan from Bangko Mabuhay to put up a two-storey building for its elementary classes in Deborahville, Brgy. Amaya I. Inspired by the success and the many students it has graduated, OLHRS acquired a 1-hectare property at Mulawin, Tanza for its high school classes. Bangko Mabuhay also assists OLHRS in handling operations, such as payroll and other financial disbursements.

Couple Reynante and Emerenciana Santillan’s Amaya’s Best is a special brand of chicharon baboy, a pork delicacy. It started as pulutan or finger food for a friend. Today, Amaya’s Best is celebrated in Tanza, Cavite. Locals, balikbayans or returning locals and companies from a nearby export processing zone can’t get enough of their secret recipe. To meet the growing demand, the Santillan business is currently undergoing massive changes that include expansion of cooking area, purchase of additional cooking equipment and storage. The loan granted by Bangko Mabuhay to Reynante in March 2008 is expected to help the couple meet the target production as well as earn for them significant additional revenues.
